Boplaas Auction Reserve Potstill Brandy 1996
Winemaker: Carel Nel ((Boplaas))

This is a single barrel selection (old port barrel) from the 1996 vintage. Double distilled from a base wine of Colombar. Distilled on the lees for more intense flavours. Tasting Note: Made in the classic Boplaas potstill brandy style, it shows complex flavours of dried peach, fynbos and oak maturation. Lovely golden colour due to the 9 years ageing in barrel. Enjoy as a liqueur brandy on its own after dinner.

Cordoba Auction Reserve 2002
Winemaker: x -Past Auction Wines (*)

Cordoba’s finest Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were selected and separately vinified and matured in French oak barrels for 17 months. The best barrels were then selected and blended. Due to no fining and minimal filtration, sediment may form in the bottle. Tasting Note: The typical dusty, spicy, peppery characters of Cabernet Franc express themselves well in this wine. The palate is filled with red berry flavours, complimented by classic French oak flavours.

A selection of two of our best barrels from the two vineyards - neighbouring Keermont and Post House closer to False Bay. One new 400 litre new French oak from VVB cooper in the Loire and the other an older 225 litre barrel. Natural fermentation after 4 hours’ skin contact and traditional basket pressing. No malolactic fermentation, 10 months in barrels. Bottled unfiltered after light bentonite fining. Tasting Note: Pale yellow colour. Toasty oak and a smoky, mineral character with underlying dried peach nose. Big, full palate with white peach flavours and leesy richness.

Grapes from our carefully manicured Mont Fleur vineyard 400m above sea level, between the Helderberg and Stellenbosch Mountains. Open top fermentation in a small tank, 3 days pre fermentation soak, fermentation with indigenous yeasts and four days post fermentation maceration. Total 16 days on skins. Maximum temperature 29°C. Drained to new French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and 20 months maturation before bottling unfiltered. No fining. Tasting Note: Complex, spicy fruit and oak entwined with cranberry nuances. Purity of fruit and spicy, dusty oak on the palate persists on the long dry finish.

The Weisser Riesling (Swartberg, Oudshoorn) and Sauvignon Blanc (Elim) were handled very reductively. The Sauvignon Blanc had 12 hours of cold maceration before pressing. Both were tank fermented and kept on the lees to just before bottling. The Chardonnay (Helderberg) and Morio Muscat (Swartberg, Oudshoorn) were cold soaked for 6 hours. They fermented in barrel for 3 months before blending and bottling. Tasting Note: Delicate pears, lemon meringue, linden blossom, terpenes and a slight noble character on the nose. Crisp, penetrating mouthfeel, delivered with a lingering finish.

Both the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon were 50% whole berry crushed to open top fermenters. They underwent cold maceration for two to three weeks with a punch-down every second day. After inoculation they were punched down at regular intervals. The wine was pressed straight to barrel. 100% New American oak was used. The wine spent 14 – 15 months in barrel. 40 cases of this wine were sold at the 2004 Auction. Tasting Note: Loaded with plums, leather, spice and cloves. Subtle hints of vanilla and white pepper. On the palate, plush, velvet fruit, deep cassis layer, silky tannins and well balanced acidity.

Hand selected and whole bunch pressed. Only cuvée juice is taken for fermentation. 50% of the base wine was fermented in classic Piece Champenoise barrels (205 litres) for 10 weeks. After fermentation, blended and bottled for secondary fermentation in bottle. Left on lees for 12 years and especially disgorged for this year's auction. Tasting Note: Beautiful lime green colour, warm, rich, biscuity aromas from the extended lees contact time. Elegant mousse with amazing freshness and interesting nutty finish. A truly unique expression of Chardonnay.

Grangehurst Cape Reserve Blend 2003
Winemaker: Jeremy Walker (Grangehurst Winery)

A Cape Blend produced from Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grapes that were sourced from prime Helderberg vineyards, Stellenbosch. Fermented in open kuipe with regular manual punch downs for colour, tannin and flavour extraction. The individual wines were barrel matured (mainly French, some American) separately for 20 months, then blended and matured for another 6 months in new French (Allier) oak barrels – a total of 26 months in oak (87% French, 13% American). Tasting Note: Dark ruby colour with a slight garnet edge; sweetish red berry, plum and mocha aromas and flavours; ripe mellow tannins and a lively acidity contribute to the structure of this wine, which has a silky mouthfeel and a lingering finish. Recommended drinking 2006 – 2010.

Jordan Chardonnay Reserve 2004
Winemaker: Gary Jordan (Jordan Winery)

Crushing and pressing of this special selection of grapes from the Nine Yards Chardonnay vineyard took place immediately after de-stemming. The juice was barrel fermented in traditional 228 litre French oak barriques using natural yeast from the vineyard. Fourteen months oak maturation and regular barrel rolling to accentuate the rich, leesy character has added complexity to this wine especially made for the CWG auction. Tasting Note: This reserve Chardonnay has intense, minerally, lemon/lime flavours with hints of butterscotch and vanilla. The full, rich mouthfeel and balanced toasty oak integrates well with the tropical fruit finish.

Jordan Sophia Auction Reserve 2003
Winemaker: Gary Jordan (Jordan Winery)

A blend of the best Cobblers Hill barrels and a reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has been named “Sophia” after the legendary mother of Faith, Hope and Charity. Representing the characteristics of the 3 Bordeaux varieties that make up this exceptional wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot were harvested from the best hillside vineyards at Jordan, with views looking out over False Bay and Table Mountain. Fermented at 28ºC with pump-overs daily over the fermenting cap. After pressing, the wine was racked to barrel where it completed malolactic fermentation. The wine spent a total of 26 months in 225 litre French oak barrels. Tasting Note: Complex, dark chocolate, black cherry and cassis intertwine with rich black berry fruit and hints of vanilla and spice from the integrated French oak. Densely layered ripe tannins add to the opulent finish. Well structured, this wine will reward careful cellaring for many years to come.

Winemaker: Danie Steytler (Kaapzicht Estate)

Three cultivars made separately and matured separately in new French oak barrels from three different coopers for 20 months before being blended and bottled on the Estate. Tasting Note: “Exuberance” is the word here: from the deep-ruby hues that dominate this mulberry-coloured blend, through to the nose and palate that display, each in its own way, the hallmarks of a great wine. The nose is cedar and sweet vanilla, followed by a rush of ripe, dark berry-fruit in profusion. The palate shows balance and harmony within its very elegant structure. A beautifully proportioned wine; tightly and neatly packed to provide great drinking pleasure.

Kaapzicht Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2002
Winemaker: Danie Steytler (Kaapzicht Estate)

Made in stainless steel fermenters with continuous pumpovers during peak fermentation. Two sets of new barrels were used for wood maturation, with the first set used for 18 months, with one racking after 9 months. The wine was then matured in the second set of barrels for 15 months. Tasting Note: Brilliant mid to deep ruby, the rim paling and showing a garnet tinge. A Cabernet that shows all the textbook ripe berry qualities: blackberry, bramble fruit characters fleshed out with mulberry, this wine shows elegant restraint with tapered mineral tones. The oak is scented rather than sweet, showing cedar and sandalwood, and although still immature, aromas suggest pencil lead and tobacco leaf. The palate is packed with cassis fruit, mineral flintiness and top-quality wood.

Luddite Auction Reserve Shiraz 2004
Winemaker: Niels Verburg (Luddite Wines)

The grapes were selected from two vineyard sites – Bottelary and Helderberg - in Stellenbosch. Cooler fermentation than normal in order to preserve fruit, with four weeks on skins after fermentation. 100% New French oak for 12 months, no fining or filtration. Tasting Note: Expressive nose of plum pudding, chocolate, dark toffee and savoury undertones. Cherry compote, chocolate sauce and cinnamon flavours – the mix of these backed with toasty wood tannins. Lingering toffee-like sweetness on the finish. A thread of Dutch “Zoute Drop” Liquorice runs through this wine.

Rudera Cabernet Sauvignon Auction Reserve 2003
Winemaker: Teddy Hall (Teddy Hall Wines)

Sorting was done in the vineyard during hand picking. The grapes were fermented with inoculated yeast (WE372) and punched down three times a day. Fermentation was at 31°C and lasted five days. Extended skin contact lasted a total of 12 days. The wine was racked using gravitation only. This was done for the first time after malolactic fermentation, and again three months later. The wine was matured in new French oak (Vicard Prestige) barriques for 23 months and is unfiltered, receiving only an egg white fining before being bottled. Tasting Note: An almost opaque wine with a deep ruby rim, and intensity of colour. A nose of great depth, with elegant violet, lead pencil and cedary cigar box flavours infused with cassis. Impressive, big, ripe, velvety tannins supply the structure and backbone of this wine. The finish is long and persistent, culminating in a truly classic Cabernet.

Simonsig Auction Reserve Shiraz 2003
Winemaker: Johan Malan (Simonsig)

A nine year old, low yielding vineyard on a lean sandy loam soil ripened the grapes to perfection. Two days cold soaking were followed by a warm fermentation and maceration which lasted 10 days before the wine was pressed into new American oak. After 10 months, the wine was racked into new French oak for a further 10 months before it was bottled. Tasting Note: Classic Shiraz, showing perfumed violet and cherry aromas with layered mocha, pepper, wild herbs and fynbos flavours. Smooth, ripe tannins and a mouth filling richness that leads to a lingering, elegant finish.

Simonsig Valentine's Viognier 2004
Winemaker: Johan Malan (Simonsig)

This wine was made from a ton of Viognier that was pressed on Valentines Day. Natural fermentation in two 4th fill Dargaud & Jaegle barrels took two months to complete. Oak maturation lasted 12 months before one barrel was selected and bottled. Tasting Note: Pungent Acacia flower and rose petal aromas, with a touch of honeyed ripeness. Soft textured mouthfeel that shows a touch of the phenolic astringency which is so typical of Viognier.

Steenberg Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc 2005
Winemaker: John Loubser ((Steenberg))

The grapes were harvested at 2am, crushed, destemmed and left on the skins for 6 hours. Fermented in 2nd and 3rd fill French oak at 14°C and then left on the lees for 4 weeks. Fined, filtered and stabilised before being bottled. Tasting Note: Typical cool climate Sauvignon Blanc, strong mineral / flinty characters with subtle hints of barrel smokiness – fresh, austere, yet long palate with great complexity.

Villiera Handmade Merlot
Winemaker: Jeff Grier (Villiera Wines)

Fully ripe Merlot was destalked by hand and hand-sorted before partial hand crushing into open 225 litre barrels for fermentation. Regular hand punching ensured good texture and colour. After a gentle pressing, the young wine returned to the barrels for malolactic fermentation after refitting the heads for malolactic fermentation. The wine was matured for a total of 19 months in new French oak and bottled unfiltered. Tasting Note: The wine displays an attractive dark red colour with intense mulberry and choc-mint aromas. The new oak makes a subtle contribution with hints of vanilla and spice on the palate. The wine is well balanced with soft tannins and a rich, long finish, structured for extended maturation.

Vinfruco Credo Sauvignon Blanc2004
Winemaker: Nicky Versfeld (Lanner Hill)

The distinctive Groenekloof terroir of deep fertile soils and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean is reflected in the enhanced varietal character of this slow ripening fruit from the Cape West Coast. In keeping with Omnia Wines’ commitment to partnerships with their producers and nature, these Sauvignon Blanc grapes were selected from a single vineyard of the Tullie family. 84 cases of this wine were sold at the 2004 Auction. Tasting Note: This expressive Sauvignon Blanc shows its cool origins in ripe gooseberry and flinty flavours with a crisp and long finish.

Vriesenhof Pinot Noir 2003
Winemaker: Jan Boland Coetzee ((Vriesenhof))

Punching down the cap during vinification has resulted in a firm wine with high extract, without losing the fragile components of the variety. Made from Pinot Noir clone 777 on Malmesbury shale soil from the top of the hill at Vriesenhof. Long skin contact and completion of alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in new wood to support the Pinot fruit, gave birth to this wine. Tasting Note: Made solely from Pinot Noir clone 777, this wine shows the typical fragile red berry fruitiness (raspberry) on the aroma with a lively, long aftertaste which will improve in time.
