AA Badenhorst Family Wines are made on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Paardeberg area. The 28ha of old bushvines is in the Siebritskloof part of the mountain.

The property is owned by the dynamic and good looking cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst. They are originally from Constantia where their fathers farmed together in the days when people still ate fresh vegetables and Hanepoot grapes and when there were a lot less traffic lights. These two have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930's to make natural wines in the traditional manner. The farm entrance is very inconspicuous but that does not bother them!

The vineyards - very old bushvines planted to Chenin Blanc average 40 years, Cinsault or Cape Hermitage 45 years, and Grenache 58 years old. The vines are unirrigated and farmed as biologically as possible. The vineyards are planted on East, North and South facing slopes bringing tremendous variety to the fruit. Fruit from other selected sites within the appellation are also purchased to complete the final blends.

The soils - 3 distinct types of granite namely the Paardeberg, Lammershoek and Lemoenfontein type are found here with many different types of sub-surface geology.

The wines - only two wines are made and bottled under the AA Badenhorst range, a white blend ( Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Gris, Verdehlo, Colombar, Viognier, Chardonnay, Semillon and another) and red blend ( Shiraz, Mourvedre, Grenache and Cinsault).

The winemaking - all fruit - red and white - is whole bunch-handled, and no crushing or destemming takes place. The whites are tranferred directly to old casks or into concrete tanks for fermentation and ageing. The red grapes are fermented in concrete tanks and open wooden kuipe. The post fermentation maceration is lengthy - up to 4 months, where after the wines are put to cask or 4000 Litre foudres. No additions are made to the grapes other than sulfur before and after fermentation.

A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines Auction Blend 2005
The grapes were co-fermented together naturally. Traditional extraction methods were used during the fermentation, followed by a long extended maceration on skins. The wine was matured in a small cask for 36 months before bottling without filtration.

Tasting note:

Full bodied, complex, with excellent age-ability.

AA Badenhorst Family Wines Kalmoesfontein Noble Late Harvest 2008
Winemaking Notes
Wonderful, fully botrytised grapes were meticulously hand picked during four passes starting late March and finishing early April 2008. The grapes were basked pressed and the little juice collected was placed into a small French oak cask for natural fermentation.

Tasting Notes
Very typical varietal and botrytis characters are prominent on the nose as well as bright fruit characters of dried fruits and marmalade and spice. The palate is wonderfully balanced with fruit and vinous texture being the hallmarks of this wine. All indications are in keeping with our philosophy this wine is unfiltered and unfined to preserve the essence of the grape and vineyard.
