Having recently won the local accolade for Best Red Wine in the Juliet Cullinan Connoisseurs' Wine Awards, and a gold medal in South Africa's Veritas Awards, the Saronsberg Full Circle 2006 has just proved its worth on the international stage by earning a coveted 5 stars from top UK wine magazine, Decanter.
In a regional tasting of South African Rhône wines, the Full Circle blend (86% Shiraz, 9% Mourvèdre, 5% Viognier) emerged from the 134 wines tasted as a wine of "outstanding" quality, according to an experienced Decanter panel that included Steven Spurrier, Lynne Sherrif MW, Nancy Gilchrist MW and Greg Sherwood MW. It's another welcome sign that the 2006 Full Circle has the potential to outshine the over-achieving 2005 vintage, which was awarded Best Red Wine (Swiss International Airline Awards 2008), Best Wine (Winemakers' Choice 2007) and Gold (Best in Class - IWSC 2008).
Amongst other things, Saronsberg winemaker, Dewaldt Heyns, attributes this to a particularly special vintage. "With its more moderate summer and protracted ripening, 2006 lent the natural concentration of our wines a certain elegance and restraint that I think has produced a wine of gratifying balance. As with all our wines, we try to create something of unique quality with the Full Circle - and I'm happy with the results."
And quality, rather than quantity, is key. With only 600 cases of Full Circle produced each year, it is a rare wine in every sense.
