Lot 25 - Graduated Protégé: Banele Vakele - Tembela Wines Collection

6 x 750ml bottles, comprising: 3 bottles of Tembela Syrah 2020 and 3 bottles of Tembela Verdelho 2020

These wines have been made by graduated Protégé Banele Vakele, under his own label, Tembela.

Banele joined the Protégé Programme in 2016 and was mentored by Louis Strydom (Ernie Els Wines) in his first year. He then spent a year working alongside Boela Gerber (Groot Constantia), followed by a year at Savage Wines with Duncan Savage. After spending a year travelling and making wine in Australia, Banele returned to South Africa to concentrate on his own brand of wines known as Tembela, which he makes at Duncan Savage’s cellar in Woodstock in the heart of Cape Town.

“The Protégé Programme was a huge stepping stone in my career. It was a fast learning curve packed with other life skills that we normally take for granted. The programme opened up doors for me to go overseas and get experience from different wine cultures. It opened the door to my current job. It most importantly opened the door for my own brand to be born. The first Tembela Wines wine was made in my second year in the Programme. I’m forever grateful to everyone involved.”

Tembela Verdelho 2020 – 3 x 750ml bottles
A beautifully expressive wine presenting with notes of green apple, fennel bulb, orange skin, naartjie zest and a subtle hint of white pepper spice. The aromas on the nose follow through to the palate, which presents with a beautiful creamy mouthfeel and is quickly balanced out by the racy acidity. There is great phenolic grip on the palate, bringing more texture and complexity to the wine. A stunning wine which will pair well with pork belly and chicken dishes.

Tembela Syrah 2020 – 3 x 750ml bottles
A very enticing nose with aromas of crushed black pepper, graphite, violets, blueberries, raspberries, plums and smoked meat. The fruit and spice shine through on the palate and are balanced by grippy, yet beautifully integrated, tannins. The wine has a stunning lingering finish. The perfect wine to enjoy with lamb or ribeye steak.

Gynore joined the Protégé Programme in 2017 and spent her first year being mentored by Miles Mossop. Her second year was spent at De Grendel Wines, working with Charles Hopkins and the third year of her internship was at Mullineux Wines, with Andrea Mullineux. Upon graduating from the Protégé Programme in 2019, Gynore was offered the position of Assistant Winemaker at Mullineux, where she is responsible for making the Great Heart wines.

“The Protégé Programme was an amazing opportunity to get the best experience possible. Kiara joined the CWG Protégé Programme in 2015 and spent her three years being mentored by David Nieuwoudt (Cederberg Cellars), Charles Hopkins (De Grendel) and Carl van der Merwe (DeMorgenzon). After graduating from the Protégé Programme in 2018, Kiara worked as Assistant Winemaker at Savage Wines before taking up the job as winemaker at Brookdale Estate in Paarl.

“The CWG Protégé Programme is a great initiative that employs newly graduated winemakers from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and gives them the opportunity to work with and be mentored by some of South Africa’s best winemakers. I worked with, and was introduced to, some great winemakers who have challenged and shaped me personally and professionally. With the CWG I have attended the most amazing tastings and courses. In my 3 years on the Protégé Programme I accomplished what would have taken double the time or even longer.”

The Brookdale vineyards are situated at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Pass, where the granite soils are rich in clay and schist. The wines are made based on traditional viticultural techniques and sustainable farming.

This maiden vintage is made from three blocks of Chenin Blanc on the Estate. Today, Praisy is the Head Winemaker at Adama Wines and a Trustee of the Nedbank CWG Development Trust which oversees the Protégé Programme.

“Being a Protégé was a significant enabler towards my winemaking career. The programme assisted me in building confidence by affording me access to the knowledge and skillset that I needed in order to map my way forward to where I am now. It presented opportunities to me, as a young winemaker, that shaped my journey to being a young, confident and experienced winemaker through well-thought mentorship and guidance. It made me realise that it is possible and where I come from doesn’t necessarily dictate where I end up.”

The HER collection is the first branded wine from Adama Wines, an all-woman company that has been making and selling wine for the past three years. The name was chosen to represent the women who strive to make the world a better place.

HER Pinotage 2020 – 3 x 750ml bottles
Ruby red with a purple rim, this is a youthful wine that is zesty and packed with upfront fruit on the nose. The wine has a substance that will linger long on the palate. It contains subtle, velvety tannins that dominate the concentration of juicy, fruity flavours in a medium-bodied structure.

Since then, Rudger’s winemaking career has been a whirlwind of successes – he has been named Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year and promoted to Winemaker at Starke Condé in 2017, and launched his own international wine brand – Kara Tara.

“The Protégé Programme gave me a great platform to learn about making quality wine. It provided exposure not just to local wines, but wines from across the world! The Programme gave me the opportunity to travel to one of the most famous regions, Burgundy, where my passion and love for the product even grew more. I was also able to work with different winemakers in different regions and that taught me to form my own idea of who I am and what kind of wines I want to produce.”

Kara-Tara Pinot Noir 2019 – 3 x 750ml bottles
The grapes were sourced from three cool-climate vineyards. All grapes were hand-picked and most of the grapes were destemmed. Half were put into open tanks and given hand-punch-downs and the other half into closed tanks that were given pump-overs.

Stark Condé Oude Nektar 2017 – 3 x 750ml bottles
This wine comes from a unique Cabernet vineyard that was 15 years in the planning. With careful selection of clone and rootstock, the vines were planted on a site overgrown with alien vegetation. At the end of 2020 and after helping to establish Highgate Wines, Thornton returned to the Cape as Assistant Winemaker to Bruce Jack at The Drift in Napier, where he has been able to produce his own brand, Thornton Pillay Wines.

Lot 31 - Graduated Protégé Wade Sander – The Brunia Collection

6 x 750ml bottles, comprising: 2 bottles of Brunia White, 2 bottles of Brunia Semillon, 2 bottles of Brunia Syrah

These wines were made by graduated Protégé Wade Sander, who now makes wines under his own label – Brunia Wines.

In his second year he worked alongside Peter Finlayson (Bouchard Finlayson) and after his final year, which he spent with Andrea Mullineux, he was offered the position of Assistant Winemaker at Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines. It was then that he started making wine under his Brunia label and in 2020, Wade moved to his own wine cellar in Stanford to focus on his Brunia Wines.

“My time in the Protégé Programme allowed me to immerse myself in wine and fast tracked my development in this exciting industry by giving me access to some of the Cape’s finest winemakers and afforded me the opportunity to learn from and engage with them. These interactions as well the international experiences I was fortunate enough to have, aided the formation of my approach and personal philosophy towards winemaking and gave me valuable perspective on the greater wine industry.”

Brunia White 2018 (Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon) – 2 x 750ml bottles

A unique and limited wine blend, made by the only South African winemakers who are both Cape Wine Masters and members of the Cape Winemakers Guild.

Concentrating the strengths of Jeff Grier (Villiera), Boela Gerber (Groot Constantia) and Carel Nel (Boplaas) just 10 three litre bottles of this 2018 red blend have been made. This wine comprises:

Lot 35 - Adi Badenhorst - AA Badenhorst Family Wines

A 1.5 litre bottle of AA Badenhorst Family Wines Ramnasgras Cinsault 2016 and a
375ml bottle of AA Badenhorst CWG Kalmoesfontein Semillon Noble Late Harvest 2008

AA Badenhorst Family Wines Ramnasgras Cinsault 2016
The grapes come from a 1.6 hectare vineyard planted in the 1950s on decomposed granite soils. The grapes are meticulously sorted in the vineyard and cooled overnight. The whole bunches are fermented in old wooden vats and pumped over once daily. When fermentation is almost completed, the vat is pressed and the must is moved to a foudre for 12 months. The wine was bottled directly off its gross lees immediately after malolactic fermentation.

AA Badenhorst CWG Kalmoesfontein Semillon Noble Late Harvest 2008, produced exclusively for the CWG Auction (please note the wax is slightly damaged on this bottle)
Wonderful, fully botrytised grapes were meticulously hand-picked during four passes starting late March and finishing early April 2008.
The grapes were basket pressed and the little juice that was collected was placed into a small French oak cask for natural fermentation. This wine was unfiltered and unfined to preserve the essence of the grape and vineyard.

It is a grape that I have developed a real feeling for. Experience and research has shown the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley to be unequivocally the most exciting and promising area for quality Pinot Noir production, easily on a par with, and often exceeding, the quality attained in other New World Pinot Noir producing regions.” Winemaker Kevin Grant.

Lot 38 - Sebastian Beaumont - Beaumont Family Wines

A 3 litre bottle of Beaumont Hope Marguerite 2017

This is a rare bottle of Beaumont’s flagship wine, made from the oldest Chenin Blanc vineyards at Beaumont, planted in 1974 and 1978.

A careful selection of the most characterful fruit, left to ferment naturally with minimum intervention, matured mostly in old 400 litre French oak, of which 25% was new wood. The wine remained on its gross lees for 10 months, with regular battonage. Final blending and bottling took place in early 2016.

Fresh, clean and powerful fruit which will develop beautifully over the next 10 years in bottle.

Lot 39 - Marc Kent – Boekenhoutskloof

A 3 litre bottle of Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2013

From this vintage, Syrah (clones SH-21 and SH1) planted at Porseleinberg was used. This site produces components with wonderful freshness, spiciness and structure. The fruit was harvested over an entire month. The complexity of this wine also benefitted from the diversity in grape composition from the nine different picks.

Loads of violets, blackcurrant fruit pastilles, white and black pepper with jamon and petrichor adding to the complexity. The purity and depth of fruit, firm velvety tannins and refreshing acidity have provided for massive ageing potential of this vintage.

Lot 41 - Jacques Borman – Boschkloof

A 1.5 litre bottle of Boschkloof Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

The vineyards are 41 years old and the grapes were harvested at 24 Balling with a yield of 5 tons per hectare. Natural and inoculated fermentation took place and after alcoholic fermentation, the grapes were left on their skins for 18 days for maximum extraction and concentration. The wine was then matured in 225 litre French oak barrels for 20 months.

This is a classic Cabernet with cedar spice and pencil shaving aromatics. Dense, dark ruby red colour with ripe plums and integrated oak on the nose. Christmas cake flavours merge with the spicy aroma. Full-flavoured palate and firm structure. Great potential for ageing and further development for the next 4-6 years.

This wine is packed in a wooden box.

Winemaker: cwg

Lot 42 - Peter Finlayson - Bouchard Finlayson

Two 1.5 litre bottles of Galpin Peak Pinot Noir 2018

Pinot Noir is unique as it displays both a delicacy and richness, but it is often quoted as depicting little varietal character of its own - rather expressing the terroir upon which it is grown. Hence, it carries the crown of being the most terroir-expressive of all grape varieties. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, where this wine was grown, represents that unique combination of soil and climate that exists in only a handful of places where the exact balance provides the perfect expression of this elusive grape.

This wine exhibits the generous texture of the vintage, moderately rich yet supple. Intriguing perfumed dark cherry and wild berry, with espresso infused cinnamon spice adding to the appeal. Deftly balanced, it portrays elegance, but the tannins form neatly on a lengthy finish.

Lot 44 - Peter-Allan Finlayson – Crystallum

6 x 750ml bottles, comprising 2 bottles of Crystallum Malbalel Pinot Noir from each of the following vintages: 2016, 2017, 2018

Mabalel is named after a poem by the legendary South African polymath Eugene Marais, which tells the story of a local chieftain’s daughter of the same name who was ambushed by the crocodile Lalele while fetching water from the Limpopo river. The vineyard is planted on ‘Kaaimansgat’ (meaning Crocodile’s lair) Farm - and a river flows past the vineyard. The site is 700m high and surrounded by dramatic mountains, with peaks that are often snow-capped in winter.

This wine is fermented using only natural yeasts. Total time in tank is 25 days (29 days for the 2018 vintage) with a 14-day post fermentation maceration. The wine spends 11 months in barrels, of which 20% is new, before being bottled

Winemaker: cwg

Lot 45 - David Finlayson – David Finlayson Wines

A 3 litre bottle of David Finlayson GS Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

The grapes were grown on Malmesbury shale on deep red clay. Produced from one site specific vineyard on Edgebaston. Made with more than a nod to the classic wines of the Medoc in the Bordeaux region, a reflection of the time David spent working at world renowned Chateaux Margaux.

All grapes were hand-picked and fermented in 30 hectolitre tanks. A traditional punch down every four hours was used to extract the fine tannins and colour from the skins. Maturation took place in French oak barrels for 14 months. Bottled with minimal fining and filtration, this is a wine that will easily mature for more than twenty years.

Leeu Passant Chardonnay 2018 (96 Tim Atkin)
Grapes for this wine come from a single vineyard of Chardonnay planted on the higher loam-based slopes of Helderberg Mountain. The site has a maritime influence that enables us to harvest fruit with incredible intensity of flavour and zesty freshness. Aged 12 months in 30% new 225 litre French oak barrels, followed by a further 6 months in 2nd and 3rd fill barriques. The textured palate has notes of peaches and lemon curd, with a touch of salinity and well-integrated oak character, all balanced by a zesty acidity. This Chardonnay will show optimally when decanted within the first 3 years after bottling and will reward if cellared properly over 10 years.

Leeu Passant Dry Red Wine 2017 (96 Tim Atkin)
56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Cinsault, 18% Cabernet Franc.
This wine was inspired by the great ageable South African wines from the 1960s and 70’s, and includes the two oldest registered red wine vineyards in South Africa - Cinsault planted in 1900 and 1932. Aged for 12 months in 500 litre French oak barrels; 30% new, then blended into seasoned 2000 litre foudre for a further 8 months. The Dry Red has attractive aromas of mulberry leaves, cassis and cedar following through on the palate which has a firm structure, grainy tannins, and hints of peppercorns and tobacco. Although surprisingly accessible now, this wine will greatly benefit from decanting if drunk within the first 3 to 5 years after bottling and will reward if cellared properly over the next few decades.

Lot 70 - John Loubser - Silverthorn Wines

6 x 750ml bottles comprising a vertical collection of Silverthorn The Green Man from 2011 to 2016

Half human, half nature, the Green Man is an ancient mythical figure representing the spirit of the forest, the continuous regeneration of life and the interdependence of all things. He manifests in many forms, most commonly as a semi-human, foliate head, representing the fusion of man and nature. In his modern guise, The Green Man has appeared under a new name – Ecology. It is this spirit, as well as the delicate green hue of Silverthorn’s Chardonnay Cap Classique, that inspired winemaker John Loubser to break with the traditional name ‘Blanc de Blancs’ and personify the wine with the name The Green Man.

The grapes are whole bunch pressed with a very low recovery rate to ensure that no bitter tannins are extracted. Fermentation takes place in a stainless steel tank and a small portion is barrel fermented to enhance complexity. Secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle and the wine spends a minimum time of 24 months on the lees after which it is manually riddled and degorged.

Simonsig The Garland 2015 (1 x 1.5 litre bottle)
The Garland is a single vineyard Simonsberg Cabernet Sauvignon grown at an altitude of 400 metres on the quintessential Stellenbosch weathered granite soils. This is one of only 60 magnums ever bottled and received 5 stars in the Platter Guide.

Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2015 (1 x 1.5 litre bottle)

Lot 73 - Rianie Strydom - Strydom Family Wines

One 3 litre bottle of Strydom Family Wines Rex Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine of Origin Stellenbosch.

This is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with flavours of red cherries, hints of tobacco and graphite. The mid-palate is fresh with a great balance between wood and fruit tannins.

2017 was a good year for yield and quality especially in respect of early to mid-season cultivars. In the case of the Cabernet Sauvignon physiological ripeness was achieved at lower sugar and higher acid content which lends to a fresher wine with lower alcohol.

The grapes were hand-picked during the morning. In the cellar, after sorting and no crushing, the whole berries were conveyed into an open fermentation tank. Total fermentation and maceration lasted 16 days and 650 litres were pressed per ton. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels of which 30% were new. This wine spent 18 months in barrel and was bottled in December 2018.
