Lot 1 - Enchanting

6 x 750ml signed bottles of wine from previous CWG Auctions from the members of the Cape Winemakers Guild

Venturing across regions, these cultivars are attractive for their own intrinsic qualities, and bottle age has added an extra alluring quality. While the Viognier is reminiscent of fynbos florals and tropical fruit, the Pinot Noir shares a violet and peppery bouquet backed with denser fruit. The Chenin Blanc has that same delicacy with a lovely tertiary note of nuts and apricots.

This lot comprises two bottles of each of the following previous CWG Auction wines:

Edgebaston 'Rooi Trekker' Viognier 2015
Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Windansea Pinot Noir 2017
Rijk's CWG Chenin Blanc 2016

Lot 31 - Adi Badenhorst - AA Badenhorst Family Wines

3 x 1.5 litre bottles of AA Badenhorst Family Wines Kalmoesfontein Red Blend 2018

The 2018 AA Badenhorst is our 13th release of this appellation wine. This vintage will be quite reserved in its youth, but I expect it to mature very well and evolve into its potential. The tannins are prominent, well-integrated and refreshing. The aromas are brooding but with complex notes of pepper, liquorice, perfume, and black cherries. The palate entry is quite dense with lavender and dark berry fruit. The finish is dry with well-spread tannins ending with savoury and black currant flavours.

Small parcels of selected fruit are sourced from seven vineyards on our farm Kalmoesfontein, and from neighbours with good tasting grapes. The 2018 vintage was beyond expectations in terms of quality and fruit expression. The yields were low, averaging around 5.3 tons/ha and 6000 litres was bottled from this harvest.

Grapes: Shiraz, Grenache Noir, Cinsault and Tinta Barocca.

Total production:  8000 bottles

Lot 32 - Chris Alheit – Alheit Vineyards

6 x 750ml bottles of Alheit Vineyards Radio Lazarus 2017

This lot comprises 6 x 750ml bottles of Alheit Vineyards Radio Lazarus 2017.

This will be the final release of my Radio Lazarus. Fortuitously it was the perfect vintage for a farewell. 2017 shows the same dusty/stony character that this wine is known for. It also shows very good concentration and poise – like the 2015, but slightly more open and generous. Along with 2012, this is my favourite vintage of Radio Lazarus.

“Gently floral at first but also mineral and stony - an unusual combination. Pear fruit and herbal notes. Chablis-like on the nose, salty on the palate. Terrific acidity, mouth-watering in the extreme. Such incredible tension and linear purity. Goes on and on and on. A relatively severe wine but outstanding.” Julia Harding MW

Lot 33 - Kevin Grant – Ataraxia

A 3 litre bottle of Ataraxia Pinot Noir 2017

Wine of Origin Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.

Pinot Noir remains one of those elusive grape varieties that, once it has cast its spell on you, becomes and remains a life-long obsession and passion. It is a grape that I have developed a real feeling for.

Experience and research has shown the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley to be unequivocally the most exciting and promising area for quality Pinot Noir production, easily on a par with, and often exceeding, the quality attained in other New World Pinot Noir producing regions.

Lot 34 - Sebastian Beaumont - Beaumont Family Wines

A 5 litre bottle of  Beaumont Vitruvian 2015

Why Vitruvian? The key component of our 250-year-old water mill is known as a Vitruvian Mill. We wanted to connect this unique wine to the history of the farm. The Beaumont family has been farming the vineyards on the farm since 1974 and it is with this experience and understanding of our unique terroir that we decided to produce this special blend.

Our philosophy with all our wines is to produce a pure expression of place. We prefer elegance over power and want this blend to be the sum of its component parts.

30% Mourvèdre,  21.5% Cabernet Franc, 12.5% Pinotage, 12.5% Syrah, 12.5% Petit Verdot, 11% Tinta Barocca.

We co-fermented the key components of this blend. The aim was to get very early integration of the varietals. The other 50% of the blend was kept as separate portions and blended over time. Eight 400 litre barrels were made and matured for 36 months in French oak, of which 35% was new.

Ageing potential: 10 - 15 years from vintage.

This wine is packed in a wooden box.

Lot 35 - Bartho Eksteen

6 x 750ml bottles, comprising a vertical collection of Bartho Eksteen Vloekskoot Sauvignon Blanc – Wooded (2014 – 2019)

A Sauvignon Blanc love affair of 35 years, with lots of personal research on terroir, origin of fruit, different wood types, barrel-size, age of barrels, cooper craftsmanship, time spent in barrel, toasting level and grain of the wood - and many hours of proving that this variety can mature just as well as any other white wine, has now become the most successful Sauvignon Blanc on the CWG Auction.

On last year’s auction, not only did this wine fetch the 10th overall highest price of R12 000 per case (6 x 750ml), but it was also the joint second most successful white wine on Auction.

This is a style that has rewarded us with the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Award, huge Cape Winemakers Guild Auction success, a few Tim Atkin 95+ awards, several five-star Platters, Sauvignon Blanc (wooded) of the Year as well as Tim Atkin’s best wooded Sauvignon Blanc out of 41 icons from around the globe.

Lot 36 - Marc Kent – Boekenhoutskloof

A 3 litre bottle of Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2012

Boekenhoutskloof Syrah has been sourced from a Wellington single vineyard since 1998. This south-easterly facing vineyard was planted in 1993 to clone SH21. The combination of its decomposed granite soil and slope toward the prevailing summer breeze, offers this wine its unmistakable character.

Produced from a celebrated vintage for Syrah in South Africa, the winemaking followed a simple, traditional approach. Spontaneous fermentation with a small percentage of whole-bunches placed into the bottom of the tanks of some batches, for a slight carbonic maceration effect. During fermentation the wine received délestage 2-3 times per day (Pigéage is rarely performed on the Syrah). After fermentation, the wine was pressed to seasoned French barriques from Saury, one of our preferred cooperages. After 18 months the wine received a light egg-white fining prior to its final 9-month élevage where a quarter was matured in a seasoned 2500 litre French foudre and the remainder in barriques.

Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2015
5 Stars – replicates 2011’s light violet whiffs and expressive plum, berry fruit and spice highlights. Trademark precision and nuanced subtlety. Dry, fine tannin partly from the older oak, 27 months. Wellington fruit, as always.

Lot 37 - Carel Nel – Boplaas

6 x 750ml bottles, comprising two bottles of each of the following vintages of Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve: 2015, 2016 and 2017

These outstanding vintages of Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve embody the Nel’s heritage of crafting the very finest Cape fortifieds, utilising Portuguese varieties, traditional vinification methods and dedication to style, to create wines that will offer decades of enjoyment.

Crafted from old vine Portuguese varietals (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Souzão and Touriga Franca) from Boplaas as well as from neighbouring farms. Grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented in lagars, with intense manual pigeage to extract optimal flavour, colour and tannin prior to fortification with wine spirit. The wine is then matured for two years in old, large-format French oak barrels before bottling, unfined and unfiltered.

Buxomly spiced, full fruited and tannic in its youth, these wines are artfully crafted for decades of development in bottle – if you wish to enjoy them in their youth, best decant and serve with earthy rustic or braised meat dishes, venison, fine hard cheeses, charcuterie, tapas and a selection of nuts, dried fruits or succulently sweet green figs.  Alternately, cellar carefully and revel in the evolution of this testament to an unwavering dedication to crafting the finest Cape fortified.

Lot 38 - Jacques Borman – Boschkloof

A 1.5 litre bottle of Boschkloof Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

The vineyards are 41 years old and the grapes were harvested at 24°Balling with a yield of 5 tons per hectare. Natural and inoculated fermentation took place and after alcoholic fermentation, the grapes were left on their skins for 18 days for maximum extraction and concentration. The wine was then matured in 225 litre French oak barrels for 20 months.

This is a classic Cabernet with cedar spice and pencil shaving aromatics. Dense, dark ruby red colour with ripe plums and integrated oak on the nose. Christmas cake flavours merge with the spicy aroma. Full-flavoured palate and firm structure. Great potential for ageing and further development for the next 4-6 years.

Lot 39 - Peter Finlayson - Bouchard Finlayson

6 x 750ml bottles, comprising one bottle of each of the following Pinot Noirs from Bouchard Finlayson: Tête du Cuvée 2005, 2009, 2012 and Galpin Peak Pinot Noir 2005, 2009, 2012

The significance of this offering is for the purchaser to measure the contrast between the Tête de Cuvée bottling and the same vintages of the Galpin Peak offering.  It is also a window of reflection on how well these wines have stood the test of time.

In this instance, the 2005 Tête de Cuvée was adjudged to be Platter Guide’s South African Red Wine of the year for their 2008 edition.

The 2009 vintage remains a particular favourite of mine and I believe these wines to be exceptional.

The 2012 was a particularly bold and fruity vintage which offers a view at a riper offering, again here is the chance to make that intriguing comparison.

 Peter Finlayson.

Lot 42 - David Sadie – David & Nadia Wines

A 3 litre bottle of David & Nadia Elpidios 2015

David & Nadia is a family owned Swartland driven project and we focus on a spectrum of organic, old and dry land bush vine vineyards from different areas with different soil types throughout the Swartland, farmed by like-minded people.

In the vineyard we aim for biological farming, and in the cellar we work as natural as possible. It is all about the soil and vineyards. We believe in a pure, fresh and natural style where site and soil are at work with minimal influence from a winemaking point of view.

Grapes from seven different Swartland vineyards are used, focusing on schist and granite soils of the mountains of the Swartland. The blend consists of Carignan (39%), Syrah (31%), Pinotage (16%), Cinsaut (9%) and Grenache (5%).

30 – 50% whole bunches are sorted and then used in the bottom of an open tank. The rest of the grapes are all sorted, destemmed but not crushed and added to the tank on top of the whole bunches. Maximum, healthy pre-ferment cold soak with a daily punch-down and CO2 gas coverage are maintained. Spontaneous fermentation occurs in the tank and we allow maximum extended skin contact (approximately 4 weeks in total). Grapes are gently pressed and drained to old French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. Wines are matured in barrel for seventeen months. Total production: 12 bottles.

Lot 43 - David Finlayson – David Finlayson Wines

A 3 litre bottle of David Finlayson GS Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

The grapes were grown on Malmesbury shale on deep red clay. Produced from one site specific vineyard on Edgebaston. Made with more than a nod to the classic wines of the Medoc in the Bordeaux region, a reflection of the time David spent working at world renowned Chateaux Margaux.

All grapes were hand-picked and fermented in 30 hectolitre tanks. A traditional punch-down every four hours was used to extract the fine tannins and colour from the skins. Maturation took place in French oak barrels for 14 months. Bottled with minimal fining and filtration, this is a wine that will easily mature for more than twenty years.

Lot 48 - Gottfried Mocke - Gottfried Mocke Wine Projects

6 x 750ml bottles, comprising the Cap Maritime Chardonnay Vertical Collection
Two bottles of each of the following vintages: 2017, 2018, 2019

Cap Maritime is located within the middle of the three appellations, the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, a mere 4km from the ocean and perched on the northwest face of the valley with views across the hills and the Bot River Lagoon. With our roots set, we strive to create wines that reflect the essence of their origin while representing a style to which we aspire.

Our Chardonnay grapes are sourced from vineyards planted on Table Mountain sandstone and decomposed granite. The climate is cool and temperate, where parallel mountain ranges channel ocean winds through the appellation during the summer.

We follow a traditional winemaking philosophy using only concrete tanks and native yeasts during fermentation, with a slightly longer élevage in Burgundian oak barriques. I prefer to accentuate texture and perfume characters over the opulence of primary fruit.

Lot 59 - Warren Ellis - Neil Ellis Wines

A 3 litre bottle of Neil Ellis Piekenierskloof Grenache 2015

This limited release wine demonstrates the distinctiveness of specific vineyard sites and represents our finest quality. The mountain vineyards of Piekenierskloof are known to produce outstanding Grenache.

This wine was sourced from un-irrigated bush vines that were planted in 1954 in the Piekenierskloof. These vines have their own roots, meaning they were not grafted on to rootstock. The soils are Table Mountain sandstone.

Harvest commenced on 27 March and grapes were harvested at 24.7° Balling with a total acid of 7.1 g/l and a pH of 3.51. Fermentation was initiated in stainless tanks and underwent a series of punch-downs before completion of fermentation and malolactic fermentation in the barrel. This wine spent 19 months on 20% new, 20% 2nd fill and 60% older 500 litre barrels. Bottled in August 2016.

The 2015 vintage contributed to a deeper colour than usual. The wine has dark cherries with perfumed floral aromas which flow on to the palate. The palate has a lovely freshness, great length, richness and fine grippy tannins.

Lot 60 - Gordon Newton Johnson - Newton Johnson Family Vineyards

A 5 litre bottle of Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Pinot Noir 2017

I selected this 2017 vintage of Family Vineyards Pinot Noir as it is one of our finest and most generous wines. It was a perfect year in many ways, the warmth of the vintage producing great depth and structure in the wine for aging.

The ‘Family Vineyards’ Pinot Noir is the archetype of our farm, having evolved from the vineyard sites with the most repute and refinement. Through the years every aspect of these vineyards has been detailed and fine-tuned so as to illustrate their authenticity, and is the embodiment of our relationship with this farm.

2017 is one of the finest vintages through which the farm has been able to encapsulate the breadth of its expression. Layered, dense fruit of cranberry, raspberry, blackberry and Turkish delight alludes to the various vineyard parcels. The fresh, dewy lift and full, sweet violets on the nose conveys the clarity of our “Mrs. M” vineyard in Granite soil. The broad, chewy texture engulfs the palate; framed by the stringy, abrasive tannins of Windansea Vineyard; leaching soft spices of cinnamon, clove and fennel in the finish.

Accolades:  5 stars from 2019 Platters Wine Guide,  95 points from Tim Atkin’s 2020 South Africa Report

6 x 750ml bottles, comprising one bottle of each of the following wines:
Rall Ava Syrah 2017, 2018, 2019
Rall Ava Chenin Blanc 2019, 2018, 2017

This Rall wines lot comprises the last three vintages (2017-2019) of my two premium white and red wines.

With the focus always being on the Swartland for me; in my mind it could only be Chenin and Syrah - and after working in the region for 10 years, I was confident that I had found two sites special enough to stand alone; and to also carry my daughter's name.

The Ava’s are produced in minuscule quantities from extremely low yielding, predominantly schist sites close to the Kasteelberg in the Swartland.

Both this Chenin Blanc and Syrah were Tim Atkin MW’s White and Red “Wine Discoveries Of The Year” on release and all 6 wines in this lot were awarded 5-Stars in the Platter’s Guide.

Lot 66 - Dewaldt Heyns – Saronsberg

A 5 litre bottle of Saronsberg Shiraz 2013

The grapes were hand-picked in the early morning and force cooled to 4°C. They were then bunch sorted, destemmed and berry sorted on vibration tables.

Depending on the vineyard, the berries were gently crushed into a satellite tank and deposited in open and closed fermenters, while some were kept whole. The juice was pumped over once daily during this period. The fermenting cap was manually punched down four times daily and one pump over per day. The rest was given extended maceration after fermentation. Total time on the skins varies from 11 to 28 days. The wine was then pressed into 90% new and 10 % second-fill Allier French oak barrels. After malolactic fermentation, the wines were given a low sulphur dose and left on the gross lees for 10 months. The wine was then racked, blended and returned to barrels. After a total of 20 months in barrels the wine was racked and filtered through a coarse sheet filter. Bottling was done with a fine sheet filtration.

The wine has a deep, dark purple colour with succulent ripe fruit flavours - both dark and red, supported with scents of violets and delicate spice. The mouthfeel has depth and clarity of fruit with integrated oak flavours. Finely crafted tannins and a beautiful, layered fruit-infused finish.

Lot 68 - John Loubser - Silverthorn Wines

6 x 750ml bottles, comprising a vertical collection of Silverthorn The Green Man (2011 – 2016)

Half human, half nature, the Green Man is an ancient mythical figure representing the spirit of the forest, the continuous regeneration of life and the interdependence of all things. He manifests in many forms, most commonly as a semi-human, foliate head, representing the fusion of man and nature. In his modern guise, The Green Man has appeared under a new name – Ecology. It is this spirit, as well as the delicate green hue of Silverthorn’s Chardonnay Cap Classique, that inspired winemaker John Loubser to break with the traditional name ‘Blanc de Blancs’ and personify the wine with the name The Green Man.

The grapes are whole bunch pressed with a very low recovery rate to ensure that no bitter tannins are extracted. Fermentation takes place in a stainless steel tank and a small portion is barrel fermented to enhance complexity. Secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle and the wine spends a minimum time of 24 months on the lees after which it is manually riddled and degorged.

 Lot 69 - Johan Malan – Simonsig

The Simonsig 2015 Magnum Collection comprising a 1.5 litre magnum bottle of each of the following 2015 wines: Tiara, The Garland & Kaapse Vonkel Brut

“These three magnums represent three of the very best wines I had the pleasure of making in my 40 years at Simonsig Estate.” Winemaker Johan Malan.

Simonsig Tiara 2015
The Tiara 2015 hails from the stellar 2015 vintage which is regarded as a perfect 10. It is our flagship Bordeaux blend, first bottled in 1990. It was a Veritas Double Gold medal winner and will mature for many years to come.

Simonsig The Garland 2015
The Garland is a single vineyard Simonsberg Cabernet Sauvignon grown at an altitude of 400 metres on the quintessential Stellenbosch weathered granite soils. This is one of only 60 magnums ever bottled and received 5 stars in the Platter Guide.

Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2015
Kaapse Vonkel is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.  It is 50 years since my father, Frans Malan, made the first Cap Classique in South Africa in 1971.  This is a magnum to celebrate this major event as well as the 50th anniversary of the Stellenbosch Wine Route. The 2015 Kaapse Vonkel is also the wine that won me the coveted Diner’s Club Winemaker of the Year title in 2020.

Lot 70 - Frans Smit – Spier

The Spier Collaborative Series. 2 x 750ml bottles, comprising one bottle of These Waves Viognier 2015 and one bottle of These Waves Merlot 2012

Spier supports social change by investing in contemporary African arts. The Spier Collaborative Series is a collection of limited edition wines that honour Spier’s arts-related projects, collaborations and associations.

These Waves Viognier 2015
This golden buttery straw-hued Viognier was fermented in French oak and matured for eight months on the lees. Grapes were hand-harvested from a tiny vineyard in the picturesque Elgin valley. With very wet winters and cool summers, the terroir is known to be the birthplace of special aromatic wine cultivars like Viognier.  Floral aromas with apricot, delicate spice notes and violets. A wine with a rich, creamy mouth-feel and a discernibly mineral aftertaste.

These Waves Merlot 2012
Vines growing on the mild west-facing slopes of the Helderberg mountains have produced grapes with remarkable concentration and wines famed for their ageing potential. Grapes are picked in the cooler pre-Autumn mornings of March and then hand-sorted, berry by berry. Cranberries, fresh black cherries and spearmint are followed by crushed cherries, pomegranate and subtle oak spice.

Lot 71 - Rianie Strydom - Strydom Family Wines

A 3 litre bottle of Strydom Family Wines Rex Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine of Origin Stellenbosch.

This is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with flavours of red cherries, hints of tobacco and graphite. The mid-palate is fresh with a great balance between wood and fruit tannins.

2017 was a good year for yield and quality especially in respect of early to mid-season cultivars. In the case of the Cabernet Sauvignon physiological ripeness was achieved at lower sugar and higher acid content which lends to a fresher wine with lower alcohol.

The grapes were hand-picked during the morning. In the cellar, after sorting and no crushing, the whole berries were conveyed into an open fermentation tank. Total fermentation and maceration lasted 16 days and 650 litres were pressed per ton. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels of which 30% were new. This wine spent 18 months in barrel and was bottled in December 2018.

Lot 72 - Jeff Grier - Villiera

12 x 750ml bottles, comprising a vertical collection of Villiera CWG Drip Barrel Cabernet Franc, 4 bottles of each of the following vintages: 2015, 2016, 2018

I have decided that 2021 will be my swansong year. Although I am not retiring from Villiera yet, I have decided to step down from the CWG as a producing member, to make way for young talent that is abundant in our industry.

Over the last four years I have auctioned four consecutive vintages: 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 of my Drip Barrel Cabernet Franc. The demand for this wine grew steadily but this wine is now no longer available. So, my offer on the CWG Protégé Auction is two cases, each containing two bottles of three different vintages (2015, 2016, 2018). This creates a last chance opportunity to obtain some of Jeff Grier “Drip Barrel” Cabernet Franc.

Ripe Cabernet Franc was crushed and destalked, followed by fermentation in a pump-over container to maintain the integrity of the skins. I was only interested in the drip barrels. This is the fermenting wine that drips out of the berries under the weight of the skins after drawing off. It is the heart of the wine.  The juice is dark, clear, beautifully balanced and intense. The fermentation and malolactic fermentation completed in French barrels and after 18 months of maturation, it was bottled.
