Bouchard Finlayson Auction Reserve Pinot 2001

100% Pinot Noir – 2001 was a vintage when the weather gods had empathy with the farmers. A great summer with soft dry weather and excellent high quality fruit. The wine underwent fermentation and maceration for 21 days in closed vessels, followed by fifteen month barrel ageing in new Mercury barrels. Tasting note: The new wood compliment has given the wine great structure, with full, soft tannins to ensure many years of positive development. Aromatically scented with exciting whiffs of truffles and fruits of the forest.

Flagstone Dragon Tree Reserve 2001

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Pinotage – The concept behind this wine was to push the logistical boundaries of our Flagstone Winemaking technique to the limit. We picked Pinotage off our favourite vineyard in the Bottelary Hills on the 15th of February 2001. The grapes were sorted, cooled to zero degrees and de-stemmed into a Flagstone open-top fermenter. There they lay for two months at zero degrees until we picked the same tonnage of grapes from our favourite Cabernet vineyard in the Kuils River foothills. After sorting, the grapes were de-stemmed and fed by gravity into the same open-top fermenter. The cooling was switched off and cold-soak punch-downs began immediately. The whole berry mash took a further seven days to warm up to the temperature where spontaneous fermentation started. Fermentation was fairly rapid thereafter, rising to thirty-two degrees centigrade. The wine was pressed off just before primary fermentation was complete, straight into new American, one new French and one second fill French barrel. There it remained for the next eighteen months on its primary lees, undergoing malolactic fermentation in the barrel. Lees were stirred periodically and the wine received a rough pad filtration prior to bottling under screw-cap. Tasting note: Dense, dark red colour. On the nose, intense wild blackberry jumps out of the glass. This is backed up by toasty and ripe spicy plum and raspberry. The palate is as intriguing as it is balanced with loads of character. Black cherry, vanilla, chocolate chip muffin, cloves, toffee and just a hint of hedonistic animal magnetism.

Glen Carlou The Cottages Chardonnay Reserve 2002

100% Chardonnay – The CWG Auction Chardonnay has been made from the same single vineyard since 1996. Now named ‘The Cottages’, the wine is a full expression of terroir of this 1 ha vineyard. Natural yeast fermentation and 12 months maturation in 100% new French oak remains the traditional process used. Tasting note: The 2002 vintage was cool, with January rain showers expressed in the honey, straw and citrus flavours of this wine. A rich, tropical fruit palate with cinnamon oak flavours lasts with a long smooth finish.

Glen Carlou Zinfandel 2002

95% Zinfandel, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon – As always, making great Zinfandel is a tough job. 2002 was no different, with the high sugars and ripe tannins causing a long, slow fermentation in barrels. Matured for 14 months in 50/50 French and American oak barrels, blended with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasting note: A more elegant and smooth Zinfandel than the 2001, this wine has ripe fresh mulberry and black berry flavours on the nose. Very youthful palate with fresh red berry flavours continuing long on the palate, backed by big, ripe tannins.

Graham Beck Coastal Shiraz/Viognier 2002

95% Shiraz, 5% Viognier – Grapes were harvested together Northern-Rhone style and fermented dry on the skins during the punch-down period. Malolactic fermentation in tanks, after which the wine was pumped into small barrels for 13 months and then filtered and bottled. Tasting note: Prominent Shiraz character with spicy organic flavours. The addition of Viognier provides a slightly sweet dimension which lifts the Shiraz. Lots of fruit on the palate with a long aftertaste. Drink now to 2007.

Graham Beck Robertson Barrel Fermented Shiraz 2002

100% Shiraz – The Shiraz grapes were picked at phenolic ripeness and cool soaked for 52 hours. Fermentation started on the skins. Traditional punch-down of the cap, after which the wine was pressed at 12 degrees B into barrel using a traditional basket press. The last 6% alcohol was developed in barrel where the wine was left on fermentation lees for malolactic fermentation. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was kept in contact with lees by batonage every 3 weeks. Barrel matured for 15 months in 100% New French oak. Tasting note: Intense, vibrant plum-like colour. Good intensity of spice and white pepper. Explosive palate with rich concentrated wood aromatics with plums, spice and violets on palate. Long and attractive finish.

Graham Beck Robertson Muscat De Frontignan 1997

100% Muscat de Frontignan – The grapes were picked at 26?B just before raisin stage with enzymatic maceration on the skins. Natural fermentation by wild yeast followed. Developed 4% volume natural alcohol and then pressed and fortified with natural grape spirits. The wine rested for 8 months in a stainless steel tank for integration and then was then matured in small French oak for 5 years. Tasting note: Attractive colour with a limey green hue. Great nose, with wonderful grape flavour, true to Muscat. Creamy elegant fruit well supported by the nuttiness from the oak with a long lingering finish. This is a totally unique style in South Africa.

Rudera Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2001

100% Cabernet Sauvignon – The fruit is from a single vineyard, on shale in the Koelenhof area. The vineyard is trellised on a four wire Perold system. Drip irrigation is available, to combine canopy management with stress management. Handpicked grapes were brought into the cellar on 27 February at 25,5? brix. The pH was 3.4, with a titratable acid of 7,6 g/l. Sorting was done in the vineyard, followed by berry selection in the cellar before crush. Our total production was 5,1 tons per hectare (35hl/ha) and only 86 x 6 x 750ml, plus 18 3-litre bottles were made. Tasting note: The wine started out opaque with a vivid, purple rim and then changed to a deep ruby wine, with wonderful intensity of colour. A nose of great depth, but at this stage, tight-knit. Allow a few minutes in the glass: a very attractive bouquet of violets and cedary, cigar box notes. The silky tannins are not apparent at first, the rich plummy, coffee palate seems chunky and big, but elegant at the same time. The long finish is firmed-up by very ripe tannins, culminating in a truly classic Cabernet.
