Auction Wines 2009
AA Badenhorst Family Wines Kalmoesfontein Noble Late Harvest 2008
Winemaking Notes Wonderful, fully botrytised grapes were meticulously hand picked during four passes starting late March and finishing early April 2008. The grapes were basked pressed and the little juice collected was placed into a small French oak cask for natural fermentation. Tasting Notes Very typical varietal and botrytis characters are prominent on the nose as well as bright fruit characters of dried fruits and marmalade and spice. The palate is wonderfully balanced with fruit and vinous texture being the hallmarks of this wine. All indications are in keeping with our philosophy this wine is unfiltered and unfined to preserve the essence of the grape and vineyard.

Ataraxia Chardonnay 2008
Winemaking Notes The grapes used to create this wine were sourced from the same two vineyard sites along the R320, Hemel-en-Aarde, as all the previous Ataraxia CWG Auction Chardonnay wines. Intensely interventionist fruit selection was followed by an extreme non-interventionist winemaking approach. This wine was 100% fermented and matured in French oak barrels personally sourced from selected coopers in the Burgundy region of France. Fortnightly batonage was employed throughout the 10 month maturation period before the wine was carefully prepared for bottling. Tasting Notes Made as a \vin de terroir\ this wine reflects both the ancient soils and the heavily moderating maritime influenced mesoclimate in which the vines grow and the fruit ripens. The result is a wine that reflects its New World provenance yet is Old World in stylistic leaning. Signatured by minerality it effortlessly manages to be both subtle and intense on the nose and the palate. Classy and complex.

Beyerskloof Cape Blend 2007
Winemaking Notes Grapes were hand picked at optimum ripeness. The wine was made in open fermenters and was on the skins for 4-5 days at an average temperature of 26 °C. Punching of the cap was done every 2 hours to extract good colour and flavours from the grapes. After malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged in 100% new French oak for 21 months. This Cape blend was barrel selected especially for the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction. Tasting Notes A full bodied Cape blend with an intense claret colour. A complex wine with loads of blackberry and dark fruit flavours in balance with oak. This wine has a good structure with a long aftertaste and a potential to age well in the bottle.

Cederberg Private Cellar Semillon 2009
Winemaking Notes Skin contact for 12 hours and only free run juice was used. 70% of the wine was cold fermented in stainless steel. 30% was fermented in French oak for 4 months before the wines were blended to show fresh Semillon fruit with creamy lees character. Tasting Notes Distinctive, cool-climate minerality with nettles, green fig and dusty dry fynbos expressive of Elim provenance. The small proportion fermented in French oak has added complexity and length with smoky bacon aromas. Firm acidity for mouth watering freshness. Ideally suited to food and fresh enough for solo enjoyment.

Cederberg Teen Die Hoog Shiraz 2007
Winemaking Notes The name \Teen Die Hoog\ was given by the workers on the farm – not because they see this cold South Easterly facing red slate hill as the highest vineyard in the country, but because they see it as their toughest pick of the season. The grapes were picked with great phenolic ripeness at the beginning of April after a long ripening period. Cold maceration for 4 days was followed by pump overs every 6 hours. The wine went through malolactic fermentation in new French oak where it matured for 15 months. Unfiltered, this is a selection of the 3 best barrels. Tasting Notes Power with elegance. Modern and delicious. Intense Shiraz fruit. The low-yielding red slate vineyards result in lovely roasted coffee, ripe plum with dark chocolate and spicy fynbos flavours. Velvety texture with supple, well balanced tannins. Impressive length. Will develop superbly over the next 4 to 8 years. Long finish.

De Grendel Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Winemaking Notes: The grapes came from thirty-two year old bush vines with a low yield, resulting in concentrated fruit. Pressed in a basket press, the wine was made in a punch-down method and matured for 18 months in new French oak. Tasting Notes: Ripe with sweet tannins, big concentration from the old low-yield bush vines. Cabernet / cassis, black fruit and great longevity.

De Trafford Perspective 2007 (375ml)
Winemaking Notes The grapes are from our carefully manicured Mont Fleur vineyard 400m above sea level, between the Helderberg and Stellenbosch mountains. Planted in 1994 with narrow 2m rows and a high planting density of 5000 vines/ha. Open-top fermentation took place in a small tank, two days pre-fermentation soak, fermentation with indigenous yeast and four days post-fermentation maceration. Total 14 days on skins. Drained into new French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and 20 months maturation before bottling unfiltered. No fining. Tasting Notes Still quite closed and very youthful, but showing density and hidden complexity. Fine, firm tannins with integrated fruit lingering on the palate with a long finish.

Engelbrecht Els CWG 2007
VINIFICATION & STYLE The different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot were vinified separately in open stainless steel fermenters. The combination of punch downs and pump overs ensure maximum extraction of grape flavour and tannins. The wine was matured for 18 months in 300 litre oak barrels. 80 % of the barrels were new; 80% were French oak and 20% were American white oak. TASTING NOTES Appearance: Crimson red with a bright rim. Aroma: The wine has prominent Cabernet Sauvignon characteristics of sandalwood, leather and tobacco aromas. These are supported by hints of spice from the Shiraz and a strong blackberry core. Full, juicy red fruits and floral aromas complete the bouquet. Palate: The Engelbrecht Els CWG 2007 has a full palate weight with tannins that are showing good integration and length. The initial mineral impression is followed by juicy plum and black cherry flavours and concludes with a smoky coffee aftertaste. Impression: A wine with a rich oak component that will benefit from further maturation, reaching its peak after 8 – 10 years.

Flagstone The Secret Handshake 2005
Winemaking Notes Many people assume the CWG is a bit of a boy’s club. This isn’t true, but I still think we should have a secret handshake. However, no one has taken this seriously enough to even let me put it on the AGM as an agenda item. I thought therefore I should just make a secret wine. I can not share the origin of the vineyards with you, as this is a secret. Many think this has been matured in French oak – I can not confirm or deny this, as I have used some very special barrels, which may or may not have come from France. The wine is delicious, and is so creamy and luscious because of the blend, the exact proportions of which I have been sworn to silence about by my cellar hands. Tasting Notes Deep, mysterious colour introduces an intriguingly complex nose of summer red berry fruit, a touch of vanilla and pepper and a hint of mint and fennel. Soft, balanced flavours of plum, chocolate and cassis are framed by an elegant, ethereal touch of wood.

Flagstone Weather Girl 2006
Winemaking Notes The Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon both originate from the Moddervlei farm in the Elim area. The grapes were hand picked during February and March at optimal ripeness. Grape pickings were either whole-bunch pressed or crushed and left to cold soak for 12-24 hours. The cultivars were fermented separately in stainless steel tanks, using a variety of different yeasts. Post fermentation lees contact took place in tank after which the wines were racked off the lees and blended. Bottled under screwcap. Tasting Notes Pale yellow with a beautiful green tint around the edge. Clear and shiny. Nice green fig leaves and herbaceous characters on the nose, combined with prominent dusty mineral aroma. Lovely hints of passion fruit and paw paw. Amazing aromas exploding on entry. The wine has an elegant creamy fullness with perfectly balanced acidity. The mid palate is full of ripe citrus flavours, ending with a lingering clean aftertaste.

Jordan Chardonnay Auction Reserve 2008
Winemaking Notes Specially selected for the CWG Auction, this reserve Chardonnay is traditionally made using natural, wild yeast from the acclaimed Nine Yards Chardonnay vineyard. Intensely concentrated lemon-lime flavours and slow fermentation in 228 litre Burgundian oak barrels for twelve months has resulted in a classic style with a new world twist. Quartzite veins running through the 600 million year old granite sub-strata provide the backbone for the minerally flavours. Regular barrel rolling accentuates the rich, leesy character in this elegantly expressive wine. Tasting Notes An iconic Chardonnay with intense, minerally, lemon-lime flavours and hints of butterscotch and vanilla. The full, rich mouthfeel and balanced oak integrates superbly with the tropical fruit finish.

Jordan Sophia 2007
Winemaking Notes A blend of the best ‘Cobblers Hill’ barrels and a reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has been named ‘Sophia’ after the legendary mother of Faith, Hope and Charity. Representing the characteristics of the three Bordeaux varieties that make up this exceptional wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes were harvested from the best hillside vineyards at Jordan, with views overlooking Table Mountain and False Bay. Fermented at 28 °C with three pump-overs daily over the fermenting cap. After pressing, the wine was racked to barrel where it completed malolactic fermentation. The wine spent a total of 26 months in 225 litre French oak barrels to integrate the rich tannins and add complexity. Tasting Notes Complex, dark chocolate, black cherry and cassis intertwine with rich blackberry fruit and hints of vanilla and spice from the integrated French oak. Densely layered ripe tannins add to the opulent finish. Well-structured, this wine will reward careful cellaring for many years to come.

Kaapzicht Cape Blend Auction Reserve 2006
Winemaking Notes The three cultivars were vinified separately and the best tanks went to new French oak barrels for 24 months. Danie personally selected the best barrels to make up this blend. Tasting Notes Very intense dark ruby with a brooding, black centre massively structured with powerful tannins and serious oak treatment harmoniously woven into a tapestry of richly fruited layers. Superbly crafted with plush dark fruit and a tightly knit structure boding well for long life. A long focused finish, presently only hinting at the treasures to be revealed over the next 3-5 years and beyond.

Luddite FIGJAM Shiraz / Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
Winemaking Notes: A barrel selection of Shiraz which was matured for 2 years in 100% French oak. 14% Cabernet Sauvignon was blended in to add structure and backbone. Tasting Notes: Dark fruit and spice dominate the nose. A rich entry of plums, dark cherries and cloves gives the palate good weight. The wine opens up to offer dark chocolate and liquorice, counterbalanced by good wooding and fine tannins.

Neil Ellis Rodanos 2007
Winemaking Notes Exquisite parcels of Jonkershoek Valley Syrah and Piekenierskloof Grenache were separately vinified in open top fermenters. Towards the end of fermentation, the wine was racked into 100% new oak where the wine completed fermentation. After malolactic fermentation, individual components were classified and selected for inclusion into this blend. 17 months barrel maturation followed. Tasting Notes Deep in colour, this youthful elemental wine shows wonderful overlapping of aromas and flavours. Although oak is obvious on the nose, ripe sweet fruit is finely poised. Rich, ripe, generous soft mid palate with a juicy impression is supported by layered complexity. Well defined fine-grained tannins will allow for continued evolving in the cellar over time.

Nitida Decorous Sauvignon Blanc 2009
Winemaking Notes A cold and wet budding season led to a perfect long, cool ripening period. This, plus vigilant canopy management and mild stress in the vineyard from dry conditions gave us enviable flavour complexity. The 2009 Decorous is made from our favourite tank of grapes, harvested from a single vineyard on the farm. We picked on flavour looking for our wonderful steely Durbanville pyrazines with just enough tropical flavours to give a balanced full mouthfeel. Healthy grapes meant we could allow 24 hours of skin contact extracting maximum varietal aromas. Decorous is made from only free run juice which is protected and cared for throughout in the very pedantic Nitida way. Tasting Notes A wine to entertain all your senses. Racy, nettle and herb driven nose leads to delicious pyrazine grass and mushy peas on the palate, with super tones of soft pineapple, gooseberries and winter melon. The finish is all distinctive Nitida – full, lovely taut acid with lingering \khakibos\.

Saronsberg
Winemaking Notes This Shiraz / Viognier blend is a collaboration between the Heyns family and Saronsberg. The grapes were hand-picked, bunch-sorted, destemmed and berry-sorted on vibration tables. A portion of 12% was kept whole bunch. The mash was left in the fermenters for a five-day cold soak. Including fermentation and extended maceration the total time on the skins was 17 days. The wine was then pressed into 100% new 300 litre French Allier oak barrels where it completed malolactic fermentation. The Viognier was pressed whole bunch, settled and fermented in barrel separately from the Shiraz to preserve its delicate floral flavours. After 12 months the two portions were blended and left in barrel for a total of 18 months. A coarse sheet-filter preceded bottling. Tasting Notes The Shiraz (92%) Viognier (8%) blend has a bright red colour with prominent red berry and plum flavours with violets and spice undertones. The palate is full bodied, showing structured elegant tannins.

Saronsberg Die Erf Viognier 2007
Winemaking Notes The Viognier grapes were hand picked from low-yielding (30hl/ha) vines, pressed whole bunch and settled. The juice was racked to a new French Allier oak barrel and allowed to ferment with natural yeast for a period of three weeks at 17 – 21 °C. After fermentation, the wine received a low sulphur addition and was left on its fermentation lees for 14 months. It was racked and bottled unfiltered. Tasting Notes The Viognier shows a pale straw colour with orange blossom, peach and spicy flavours. The palate is full bodied with integrated oak flavours and a mineral finish.

Simonsig Auction Reserve Pinotage 2007
Winemaking Notes A twelve year old bush vine vineyard planted on a shale soil produced these excellent quality grapes. Picked at the end of January at 27 °B with high natural acidity. Two days of cold soak were followed by a very active 3 day fermentation at 26 – 27 °C. Wood maturation lasted 25 months in 100% new French (77%) and American (23%) oak before the Pinotage was bottled exclusively for the Auction. Tasting Notes Dark, brooding black berry fruit, infused with perfumed, sweet vanilla pod aromas. Rich, complex plum and sour cherry flavours intertwine with smooth ripe tannins. A boldly structured, full bodied Pinotage from an outstanding vintage indicates excellent maturation potential.

Simonsig Auction Reserve Shiraz 2007
Winemaking Notes Low yielding vineyard (5.5 T/ha) on deep red Hutton soil produced super ripe grapes. Viognier skins were added to the fermenter and gentle pump-overs with 3 delestages during 25 days on skins. Malolactic fermentation in barrel and 4 rackings were done during the 26 months in a single new Francois Freres Nevers barrel. Tasting Notes Juicy, ripe mulberries and spicy cinnamon sugar on the nose. Hints of white pepper aromas are layered with a cedary oak influence. Beautifully concentrated fruit in a framework of fine grained tannins culminating in a long silky Shiraz finish.

Villiera Shooting Star Chardonnay Brut 2005
Winemaking Notes: Slightly unripe, healthy fruit was whole bunch pressed in a pneumatic bag press. Only the Cuvee (500 litres/ton) was settled and naturally fermented. After stabilisation and addition of the liqueur de tirage, the wine was bottled for second fermentation. After 27 months on the lees, this sparkling wine was riddled and disgorged. Dosage ensured perfect balance and a further 2 years on the cork has resulted in peak maturity. Tasting Notes: Rich, creamy, yeasty nose with a full, ripe toasty flavour on the palate, developing finesse and complexity on the aftertaste. Powerful and bracing to drink now but could develop more intensity with another year in the bottle.

Villiera Terre Rouge 2005
Winemaking Notes: After years of sourcing red fruit in Devon Valley, the quality produced by the Terre Rouge (red earth) was obvious. The 2005 Auction blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc selected from the band of red earth in the area. The grapes were picked at optimum ripeness, crushed and destalked before transferring to a red wine fermentation vessel. Regular pump overs ensured good texture and colour. After gentle pressing, the young wine was racked to new French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. Evolution in the barrels was enhanced by three rackings and the wine was finally removed after 24 months before being bottled. Tasting Notes: The wine displays an attractive dark red colour with intense aromas of dark berry fruit and a hint of spice and tobacco. The new oak makes a subtle contribution with nuances of vanilla and coffee on the palate. The wine is well balanced with ripe, dry tannins and a rich, long finish, ensuring sufficient structure for extended maturation.

Waterford Estate Auction Reserve 2005
Winemaking Notes This Bordeaux-style wine was aged for 23 months in tight grained French barrels with medium toasting. Egg white fining and filtration took place prior to bottling Tasting Notes Dense crimson appearance, aromas of sandalwood, cedar and cigar box. The palate is tight and classically dry, balanced by natural acidity. Flavours of stone fruit and secondary development complement the dominant Cabernet Sauvignon notes of herb, leather and ripe cassis. Elegant, long finish with dry integrated structure, meant for extended ageing and further development.
