Cape Winemakers Guild

A beacon of authenticity and innovation

Lukas van Loggerenberg

“I feel humbled and privileged to be invited to join the Cape Winemakers Guild. I have always admired the members, core values and integrity thereof. I look forward to playing my part in the work that the Guild is doing to enrich the wine industry of South Africa.”

Lukas hails from Rawsonville and although his family was not involved in any farming he was always surrounded by the Breedekloof vineyards. After study plans fell through after school he was involved in a few harvests at cooperative cellars in the area from where he decided to further study winemaking. Having completed his winemaking degree at Elsenburg he joined Pierre Wahl at Rijks Private Cellar in Tulbagh for 3 vintages. After Rijks, Lukas ventured to the US for a permanent winemaker position in Connecticut. In 2015, Lukas’ life took a pivotal turn during a trip to the Loire Valley with his former Elsenburg roommate, Reenen Borman (winemaker for Boschkloof). A visit to Domaine de la Chevalerie, where Lukas tasted an old Cabernet Franc in a dimly lit cellar, inspired him to leave his day job and pursue winemaking on his own. The first grapes came into the small shed Lukas rented in exchange for making wine in Devonvalley in 2016 starting with a Cabernet Franc, Chenin Blanc, Cinsaut and Blanc de Noir. The range has since expanded as Lukas gets access to special parcels of grapes all over the Western Cape.

His winemaking approach emphasizes balance and purity, and he’s especially drawn to the unique terroirs of the Western Cape, focussing on old vine chenin blanc ,syrah and cabernet franc.

Lukas’ wines reflect his philosophy—elegant, with minimal oak and a focus on freshness and texture.
