Auction Wines 2023
Ataraxia Under The Gavel Chardonnay 2022
100% Chardonnay
Wine of Origin Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge
This single vineyard Chardonnay, made from organically grown grapes, revives a centuries old Burgundian winemaking “black” method.
- It was fermented spontaneously in custom ordered Burgundian barrels and without allowing the secondary malolactic fermentation to occur, which lends an arrestingly vibrant weight to the palate.
- The absence of bâtonnage adds focus and precision.
- The wine was bottled after 11 months of maturation.
Tasting Notes: A very individual and accurate articulation of Ataraxia’s “dirt”, this is a sublime wine which effortlessly balances fruit intensity with mineral acidity. A wine of pedigree and style.
Reading for drinking now until at least 2030.

Boplaas CWG Daniel’s Legacy 2021
55% Touriga Nacional, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Shiraz, 8% Tinta Barocca
Wine of Origin Western Cape
- This wine is made in celebration of Oupa Danie’s folly of mistakenly planting Tinta Barocca instead of Shiraz, after his sojourn to the Swartland in the early 1970s in an old Chevy El Camino.
- The result set Boplaas on a path of crafting fine fortifieds and Portuguese table wines in the Cape.
- This wine is crafted by blending the finest barrels of Portuguese cultivars with French cultivars originating from low-yielding old vines, and using traditional vinification methods.
Tasting Notes: Bright garnet-red wine, black hedgerow fruits, tart cranberry, ripe plum notes, spice and fynbos. This wine only reveals its true underpinnings with time in the glass and tempts one to return for more.

Mullineux Swartland ‘The Gris’ Old Vines Sémillon 2022
100% Sémillon
Wine of Origin Swartland
- Sémillon Gris is considered a South African phenomenon and this wine has gained an international following for its quality and rarity.
- In the mid-1800s, 40% of all vineyards in South Africa were Sémillon Gris, but now only a few exist.
- This vineyard was planted in 1960 on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg.
- We took cuttings from this vineyard and spent 10 years repropagating them through a nursery, and have replanted the country’s first official, legally recognized Sémillon Gris on our regenerative organically farmed vineyard, Roundstone.
“O siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudla lomhlaba
Siyawela ngapheshaya kulezontaba ezimnyama
Lapha sobheka phansi konke ukuhlupheka”
This wine represents a transition from the past to the future, as does the metaphor of transformation represented in the lyrics of Johnny Clegg & Savuka’s powerful “O Siyeza”.

Neil Ellis Wines Amper Bo Tempranillo 2017
100% Tempranillo
Wine of Origin Bottelary
- Tempranillo is old and believed by many to be the wine depicted in the Bacchus mural that serves as proof of wine in ancient Spain, linking Tempranillo to the Phoenician settling of the Iberian Peninsula as far back as 1100 B.C.
- Although it is a medium-bodied wine, it has incredible tannins which give it its incredible ability to age.
- Historically, this was the first single varietal Tempranillo to have been sold on the auction.
