Ataraxia Under The Gavel Chardonnay 2022

100% Chardonnay
Wine of Origin Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge

This single vineyard Chardonnay, made from organically grown grapes, revives a centuries old Burgundian winemaking “black” method.

  • It was fermented spontaneously in custom ordered Burgundian barrels and without allowing the secondary malolactic fermentation to occur, which lends an arrestingly vibrant weight to the palate.
  • The absence of bâtonnage adds focus and precision.
  • The wine was bottled after 11 months of maturation.

Tasting Notes: A very individual and accurate articulation of Ataraxia’s “dirt”, this is a sublime wine which effortlessly balances fruit intensity with mineral acidity. A wine of pedigree and style.

Reading for drinking now until at least 2030.

Bartho Eksteen Vloekskoot Sauvignon Blanc – Wooded 2022

100% Sauvignon Blanc
Wine of Origin Upper Hemel-en-Aarde

  • This is the most successful Sauvignon Blanc in the CWG Auction history.
  • This wooded style was recently praised by Jancis Robinson MW as her favourite WHITE
    wine from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
  • A regular 5-star Platter’s winner.
  • A regular Tim Atkin MW 95+ award winner.

Tasting Notes: Nods towards Pessac-Léognan but has a Cape character all of its own. Flinty, grapefruit, fresh lime, green herb flavours. Focused, with superb intensity. Older oak adds complexity and gravitas.

If you can put away some bottles for a couple of years, you can delay the pleasure and have it back with interest for anything up to six years after harvest.

Beaumont Family Wines Arturo’s Pinotage 2021

The vineyard was planted in 1974 by Raoul Beaumont on the east-facing slope of the Beaumont farm on cool, clay-rich shale soils.

  • Very low yielding single vineyard site.
  • Arthur Pillman from Goedvertrouw Estate in Bot River allowed Sebastian to make a wine in 1993 from this vineyard. The wine was called “Arthuro-Sebastiano”.
  • Arthur was the person who inspired Sebastian to start winemaking.
  • This wine illustrates the beauty of the cooler climate, old vine style of Pinotage.

Tasting Notes: Bright purple in colour. Perfumed with intense fruit and spice from the grape.

Fresh, fine tannins on the palate are beautifully coated by the fruit.

Boplaas CWG Daniel’s Legacy 2021

55% Touriga Nacional, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Shiraz, 8% Tinta Barocca
Wine of Origin Western Cape

  • This wine is made in celebration of Oupa Danie’s folly of mistakenly planting Tinta Barocca instead of Shiraz, after his sojourn to the Swartland in the early 1970s in an old Chevy El Camino.
  • The result set Boplaas on a path of crafting fine fortifieds and Portuguese table wines in the Cape.
  • This wine is crafted by blending the finest barrels of Portuguese cultivars with French cultivars originating from low-yielding old vines, and using traditional vinification methods.

Tasting Notes: Bright garnet-red wine, black hedgerow fruits, tart cranberry, ripe plum notes, spice and fynbos. This wine only reveals its true underpinnings with time in the glass and tempts one to return for more.

Drink from 2029 onwards.

Dewaldt Heyns Family Wines CWG Shiraz Reserve 2021

100% Shiraz
Wine of Origin Tulbagh
