Cape Winemakers Guild

Jordan Wines’ Internationally Acclaimed Visionary

Gary Jordan

“Being able to decide that moment and time when you are going to take that historical vintage and bring the grapes into the cellar, I think, is one of the most important decisions winemakers make.”

Having qualified and worked as a geologist, Gary attended the MSc program in viticulture and oenology at UC Davis, USA, and worked as a winemaker in California before spearheading the growth and development of Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa with his wife, Kathy. He took the company from a small, family-run vineyard to being rated one of the most successful, internationally-acclaimed wineries in South Africa, adding three restaurants (including Michelin-listed High Timber Restaurant in London, UK), a boutique hotel and a safari lodge to the portfolio. A past chairman of the CWG, among recent international highlights was being awarded the Chardonnay Trophy as well as the Red Wine Trophy at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. Jordan was also awarded the Trophy for the South African Producer of the Year.

Diversification and opportunity has seen Gary purchase Mousehall Country Estate in Tidebrook, East Sussex in the UK, where the geology is similar to Champagne. In between being actively involved at Jordan Wine Estate, Gary and Kathy are planting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier for English sparkling wine, as well as botanicals for artisanal gin production.
